QuITE Awards 2012

The College of Science, Technology and Applied Arts of Trinidad and Tobago (COSTAATT) is proud to announce that it secured the top prize in the recent Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago’s (ACTT’s) competition for Quality in Tertiary Education (QuITE) awards, at a ceremony held at the National Academy of the Performing Arts (NAPA), on Friday 18 November 2011.

COSTAATT, which was the first tertiary institution in Trinidad and Tobago to gain accredited status with the ACTT in November 2010, was awarded the first place in the category Excellence for an Established Quality Management System overshadowing the efforts of both the University of Trinidad Tobago (UTT) and the University of the West Indies (UWI) who placed second and third respectively.

In its brief eleven year history, the College, as a part of its mission to transform lives, has maintained a staunch commitment to continuous improvement in all its operations, including the implementation of rigorous academic quality standards based on international benchmarks.

The receipt of this QuITE award serves as validation of the enormous growth and development of the College, which has registered several successes in recent times including:

• the implementation since 2008, of over 55 new degree, diploma and certificate programmes;
• a 130 percent increase in enrolment between 2008 and 2011 to nearly 12,000 students, making COSTAATT the largest national tertiary
institution in Trinidad and Tobago; and
• the establishment in October 2011, of the Ken Gordon School of Journalism and Communication Studies.

The College eagerly looks forward to January 2012, when it will welcome students in previously underserved areas of east Trinidad to its new Sangre Grande campus. Plans for the construction of a 30 acre state-of-the-art flagship campus in Chaguanas are currently underway as the College prepares for this new phase of its development.

Just two days before Christmas, Joey Chaitram, instead of shopping for last-minute gifts, was lying unconscious on the ground at the top of Mucurapo Street next to the Marabella taxi stand in San Fernando bleeding from the head.

Luckily for Chaitram one person stopped and rendered assistance. Kerri-Ann Leon Sing, a COSTAATT student, had just finished her final exam and was on her way to do some Christmas shopping. Walking up Mucurapo Street, Leon Sing saw a small crowd of people and in the centre of it was Chaitram, unconscious and bleeding from the head.

Leon Sing said, “I wasn’t sure if the man was dead. There was a lot of blood oozing from his head and onto the pavement. I asked anyone if they had called an ambulance and several people said yes, but were unable to get through.”

“I called the ambulance more than three times and my calls were placed on hold. Several other bystanders tried calling the ambulance on their phones and still were not able to get through. After a few minutes the crowd dispersed and I was left with the helpless man,” she said.

Chaitram needed help and Leon Sing hoped there were police patrolling in the area to offer assistance. With no luck, Leon Sing walked down to the San Fernando Police Station approximately ten minutes away. Nearing the police station Leon Sing saw two officers exiting the police station.

Leon Sing said, “Officers are you on patrol? There is an Asian guy unconscious and bleeding at the top of Mucurapo Street if you can render assistance. They said OK, and I went back and sat with the man who was coming to.”

“I found out his name and bought a towel and placed it to the wound at the back of his head,” she said.

Approximately 20 minutes elapsed and Leon Sing said she saw no sign of the officers however she heard a siren and thought that someone had got through to EHS. It was not an ambulance, however, but another police vehicle heading in the opposite direction.

Not thinking twice, Leon Sing ran down Mucurapo Street and flagged down the three officers in the vehicle which was stuck in traffic. She explained to them the situation and that the man on the ground needed assistance.

She walked back to Chaitram hoping that the officers would follow. After 15 minutes, Leon Sing had a sinking feeling that the officers were not coming.

According to Leon Sing, from the time she stumbled upon Chaitram and in the process of trying to get help for him, an hour had passed. Chaitram, who was pale due to the amount of blood loss, started to get his colour back. Leon Sing realised he was not Asian but East Indian. A now conscious Chaitram wondered what happened to him.

Leon Sing said, “I don’t know, I just found you lying on the ground bleeding. I’m going to take you to San Fernando General Hospital.”

Chaitram held the towel to his head as Leon Sing helped him to his feet and walked to Library Corner to get a taxi to go to the hospital.

Leon Sing waited with him, called his relatives and kept Chaitram company until a doctor or relative showed up. Another hour passed and he was just about to go in and see the doctor when his daughter arrived.

Leaving the hospital and walking back up Harris Promenade she saw the same two police officers she had first asked for help. One of the officers looked away and avoided looking her directly in the eye. Asked why she decided to help a stranger she said “We should all remember the spirit of Christmas, one man gave of himself to save the world. We should all try to do the same.”

Fine goalkeeping by Matthew Wiltshire earned COSTAATT a share of the points in the second round of the UTT Football League against the Caribbean Nasarene College (CNC) at the UTT’s O’Meara Campus in Arima last Friday. Despite being without three key players for their match-up against the rookies, the boys in purple were highly favoured to register their second league victory after their round one victory over TTHTI. Instead, they had to settle for a disappointing goalless draw. Read More
